Archbishop of Canterbury welcomes Islamic law in Britain
LONDON – Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has called for a limited application of Islamic law in Britain, winning
immediate praise from British Muslims. The unusual proposal from Britain’s highest ranking religious leader would, if adopted, allow British Muslims to resolve marital and financial disputes under Shariah law, rather than through British courts.
In a BBC interview, Williams said incorporating Islamic law could help improve Britain’s flagging social cohesion.
He added that making such a move seems “unavoidable.”
Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s spokesman immediately rejected Williams’ proposal.
The archbishop said he was not advocating that Britain allow some of the more extreme aspects of Shariah, which can include harsh punishments and restricting the rights of women.
